2020 has been a year of uncertainty around the globe. As we continue into the holiday season, we reflect on how to best give back not only to the Bitcoin community, but also to efforts that make the world a safer, better, more sovereign place for all.

That’s why we’re delighted to announce that Casa will be supporting the Human Rights Foundation’s Bitcoin Development Fund for Giving Tuesday 2020 by donating 25% of our sales made on this Tuesday, December 1.

Why Casa supports the Human Rights Foundation

Founded in 2005, the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting civil liberties and challenging authoritarianism around the world. The organization’s emergence into the Bitcoin ecosystem was initially championed by HRF’s Chief Strategy Officer Alex Gladstein, who’s paved the way for other nonprofits to understand Bitcoin’s capacity as a tool for human rights.

Today, HRF works to grow Bitcoin adoption through educational programming for nonprofits and, most recently, their launch of the Bitcoin Development Fund, created to support technical network innovation.

Earlier this year, Casa was proud to announce our partnership with HRF, providing security and privacy consulting to the activist and dissidents the organization helps support.

About the Bitcoin Development Fund

HRF launched its Bitcoin Development Fund in June 2020 to support software developers working to make the Bitcoin network more private, decentralized, and resilient - so it can better serve as a financial tool for human rights activities worldwide.

Projects the Development Fund supports include:

  • CoinSwap - a technique that helps defeat state and corporate financial surveillance by making it harder for authorities to trace Bitcoin transactions.
  • Openoms - the creator of JoinInbox, a graphical user interface for JoinMarket, a decentralized CoinJoin implementation. He will be working on making it easier for users to “make” CoinJoin markets by offering their BTC to others, expanding the liquidity pool.
  • Evan Kaloudis - the creator of Zeus, an iOS and Android app that lets individuals use their Bitcoin and Lightning node from their phone, allowing them to make or receive micropayments from anywhere.
  • Fontaine - the creator of Fully Noded, an open source iOS app that allows individuals to interact with and use their Bitcoin node from their mobile phone.
